About Toto

The band Toto was formed in 1976 by guitarists Jeff Porcaro and David Paich (who were also acclaimed studio musicians who worked with Boz Scaggs at the time) and bassist/singer Bobby Kimball. The name comes from the Latin word meaning "all all-encompassing," the group was intent on exploring every musical style.

In 1981, Toto's third album Turn Back is a failure however, they bounce back with their fourth album Isolation with two hits, including the title track and Roseanna. The album and tour make Toto a household name across the globe.

After a gap of few years, Toto return with the album Fahrenheit in 1986. The album is a departure from the ballads on previous albums, and features some heavy rock. It was their first platinum album in North America.

In the course of recording the fifth album the group loses their manager and is faced with financial problems. They decide to record a new album and change their name an entirely different producer. The lead singer Fergie Frederiksen is let go and replaced by Joseph Williams, son of the legendary film composer John Williams and 1950s actress Barbara Ruick. Joseph is a more natural frontman than Frederiksen and gives the band a needed boost.

The band releases Mindfields in 1999, and then embarks on a massive worldwide tour. After several weeks in Europe the band travels to Japan for sold-out shows. After a short break, Toto resumes recording and continues to record their first live album titled Absolutely Live in 1993 which includes a cover of Weezer's song Hash Pipe in response to the band performing their hit song Africa on the recent tour. Toto's touring band is rounded out by drummer Lenny Castro, bassist Shannon Forrest and keyboardist Shem von Schroeck.

In 1996, the band was reunited for a tour and album. It was the first time all original members were on stage together in over a decade.

The next year, Toto toured together with Ringo Starr and his All Starr Band. This was the last time that all of Toto's original members were together on stage at the same time. Following this, the group disbanded once again. Toto came back together for the benefit concert in 2010 to raise funds for the ALS Foundation. This was the first time all original Toto members appeared on stage together in over 31 years.
